Each team has seven players: six on the court and one sub who rotates in on the serve. A libero can play if one turns up.

What is open play volleyball?
Open play volleyball is a one-off game you join on your own. You book a single spot in a 6v6 game at your level, and GoodRec books the court, brings the balls and fills the teams.
Is open play the same as drop-in or open gym volleyball?
Yes, they’re different names for the same idea: a game you join on your own, without a team. With GoodRec you book your spot in the app before you go, so every game has a set number of players and a set level, instead of a gym where whoever turns up waits for a turn.
How much does open play volleyball cost?
Game price varies depending on game format, time, day and location, and the price of each game is shown before you book your spot.
What if we don't have enough players to play 6v6?
The minimum for a volleyball game is 8 people, so you can play 4v4. If we have less than this, we’ll cancel the game with advance notice and players will be refunded in app credits.
What if I’m unsure about the level I belong to?
To start, it’s best to go to the lowest of the levels you're considering, you can always adjust for future games. If you get to a game and feel comfortable you can move to higher level games.
Why are there 14 spots if it's 6v6?
Each team carries one sub. Every game starts with 12 people on the court, and the subs enter as the teams rotate to serve. We can also have a libero position in the game if there is a libero player who attends the game.
Is there a required skill level?
Our open play volleyball sessions come in four levels: Social, Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced, to provide the ideal experience for each type of player. Social play is for those fresh to the game with 0-2 years of experience. Intermediate and High Intermediate are for players with 2-3 years of experience.
How many players are on each team for open play volleyball games?
Each team has 7 players, the games are in 6v6 format with one sub per team.
Can I bring a friend with me?
Absolutely. Just have them grab their own spot in the app so we know the numbers. Only people who have paid and are listed on the game are allowed to play, and whether a friend can come and watch is up to the facility.
Do I have to pay for games in advance?
Yes. You pay for your spot when you book it in the app. A game needs at least eight players to go ahead, and paid spots keep last-minute dropouts and no-shows from taking it below that.
What is the minimum age to join a game?
You must be 18 years or older to join any GoodRec game.
Do I need to bring any equipment?
Not at all! We provide the balls and the net. Just keep an eye on the games chat and description in case that specific facility has requirements.
Do you run other sports?
Yes. GoodRec runs pickup soccer, pickup basketball and open play volleyball. Which ones are available depends on the city; the app shows everything running near you.
